Cherry, Nanking - Bareroot Bundle
Description
Although classified as a shrub, it can grow to 12’ tall and 12’ wide which is a small tree in our book. With its bushy structure, it makes a great hedge row for windbreaks, privacy, and natural fences. However, this “fence” will change colors across the seasons. These plants are pretty tolerant. They are not particular to soil type and are drought tolerant once established.
Nanking cherry withstands cold winters and hot summers. They spread by root suckers or by branch rooting (layering) and can be grown as single plants or as a hedge. This self-rooting is not frequent enough to consider the plants to be invasive and can be easily stopped by removing any rooted branches.
Full sun is best. They also prefer well-drained soil, enriched with compost. Winter snow coverage is, if anything, helpful, as it insulates the bush.
Nanking cherry is ideal for a home food garden or wildlife fencing because it’s compact, ornamental, and easy to care for. By comparison, many fruit trees require a fair bit of pruning and pest and disease management, and they take more space.
